At their weekly primestock sale on Monday, John Swan Ltd sold 71 clean cattle, 61 OTM cattle, 3,454 new season lambs and 625 ewes.

Bullocks (21) averaged 218.4p per kg and sold to 245p (-2.6p on week). Heifers (47) averaged 216.4p per kg and sold to 242p (-0.6p on week).

Three young bulls averaged 170 sold to 172p (n/c on the week) and 61 beef type OTM cattle averaged 124p per kg and sold to 200p (-0.9p on the week).

New season lambs averaged 155.7p per kg (-3.3p on the week) and sold to £92,top price 215.3p per kg for Beltex.

Ewes averaged £52, and sold to £123 for a Texel Ram.

Heavy ewes averaged £63, light ewes sold to £66 for Cheviots and averaged £42.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 18 prime cattle, one young bull, 42 over 30 month cattle, 4,922 prime lambs and 6,470 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle were short of requirements and sold to a similar trade, more quality sorts needed. Top price to 218.5p for a Charolais heifer sold by J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn.

A larger number of cast cows saw the best show of quality for some time sell to a much improved trade, dearer than the national trend. Top price to 151.5p for a Limousin from J. Magnay, Smallholms. Another grand show of 4,922 prime lambs met a fine trade selling to a full ring of active buyers. The sale averaged 163.2p (SQQ 165.7p). All classes sharper on the week with the best quality lambs realising extreme rates. More export weight lambs required. Heavy lambs also easier to sell. Top price of £100 per head and 250p per kilo for Texels from Barrogill Mains. A massive show of 6,470 cast ewes and rams were forward to usual buyers.
