An 85-year-old Kelso company has won a national award in recognition of its use of modern technology to assist customers.
A. Hume Country Clothing took home two awards from the Drapers Independents Awards 2014, namely Best Independent Multichannel Operator and Independent Retailer of the Year.
Archie Hume said: “In 2007 we took the decision to launch an eCommerce website as we wanted customers who shopped in our retail premises to be able to shop with us 12 months of the year.
“We knew we stocked quality niche brands not readily available on the high street and felt strongly that we wanted to offer our collections to a wider customer base.”
He added: “We pride ourselves on our customer service and it was imperative we extended this to our online customers.
“We always listen to what our customers are looking for in relation to service, products offered, devices used to shop, social media needs and what online customers find positive or negative about their experience with us, from placing an order to receiving their delivery – the list is endless.
“Being a multi-channel retailer is a challenge, you can never stand still, but that is what drives us – it is exciting always aiming to be the best of the best.
The awards cover a wide range of achievements in fashion retailing and aim to put the independent side of the sector on the map.
The judging panel was unanimous in selecting Hume’s for both awards, commenting: “We would go so far to say we were passionate about the A. Hume business, which embodies all the best aspects of the modern independent clothing retailer.”
Mr Hume said the awards recognised the efforts of all those connected to the firm.
He added: “We have fantastic independents in Kelso and together their combined appeal helps draw visitors from far and wide. These awards, and the recognition they bring, is good not just for us, but for the whole town.”
