The Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce is hosting a series of special “Meet the Candidates” meetings in the run-up to May’s UK General Election. The initiative comes in response to demand from SBCC members to have the opportunity to quiz candidates about their parties’ policies on a wide range of issues affecting the Borders’ economy.

Letters of invitation have been sent to all candidates in the forthcoming Election. The series of “one-to-one” breakfast meetings got under way on Monday, (February 23) and will be completed before the official start of the Election campaign itself. Topics expected to be covered at this exclusive series of meetings will range from tourism, agriculture, transport and inward investment to business rates, interest rates volatility and the prospects for sustainable economic recovery.

Jack Clark, SBCC Convenor, said: “The economy will rightly be at the heart of the Election campaign. These breakfast meetings will be an ideal opportunity for our members to raise issues of vital importance to their businesses and the wider Borders economy. What we didn’t want was yet another unseemly political ‘rammy’.”
