Broadband speeds on increase

INTERNET surfers in the Borders are set to see a major increase in broadband speeds next year following further upgrades by BT.

The communications giant has announced plans to roughly double the speeds of super-fast fibre broadband, which is due to be available to more than 13,000 homes and businesses in Innerleithen, Peebles and Galashiels next year.

Download speeds of the ‘fibre to the cabinet’ super-fast broadband technology are expected to rise from up to 40Mbps to up to 80Mbps, whilst upload rates will increase from up to 10Mbps to up to 20Mbps.

Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, commented: “It will provide a further boost for local businesses and homeworkers as well as families and other people for whom the internet has become an essential part of their daily lives - whether it’s for leisure, education or business.”
