Borders General Hospital escapes flooding thanks to fire crews

A BATTLE to prevent flood water entering the Borders General Hospital near Melrose has been won by fire crews, writes Sandy Neil.

Two burns surrounding the hospital burst their banks following an afternoon of torrential rain.

Water poured along the hospital’s road towards the main entrance and the door to the accident and emergency department.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service - including two specialised pumping units around 4pm were mobilised

Group commander Colin Bruce from Galashiels said the casualty department was within 30 minutes of being flooded.

Patients were not evacuated and crews have now returned to their home stations.
