Bombshell for Selkirk as Harky joins Jed

There was shock at the weekend with news that Selkirk stalwart Fraser Harkness was leaving the club he has played for since a teenager, to join Jed-Forest for next season.

The news was broken on the Riverside Park club’s official Twitter feed on Saturday.

The Souters’ former first XV captain, Harkness, who made 265 senior appearances and scored 141 tries, was unavailable for comment, but Selkirk confirmed the news on its website, where president John Rutherford remarked: “Unfortunately I cannot comment on this, because Fraser has not informed me or the club he is officially leaving.”

Meanwhile, Hawick and head coach Phil Leck are also parting company, after being unable to agree new terms to extend the two-year arrangement.

Greens president Rory Bannerman thanked Leck for his “excellent” work, which saw Hawick gain promotion.

Elsewhere, former Borders players Roddy Grant, Lee Jones and Scott Wight are named in the Scotland squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games, alongside Richie Vernon, James Eddie, James Johnstone, Scott Riddell, Colin Shaw, Colin Gregor, Mark Bennett, Sean Lamont and Tommy Seymour.
