The Cub who swam the equivalent of the 22-mile Channel crossing in Selkirk pool has raised more than £2,000.
Ivan Burt-Smith completed the 1,416 lengths last Tuesday, but hopes to raise more money as the national Scouting magazine plans to run a story on him.
Mum Jan said: “We’ve got a lot of the money in but there is still a lot more to come in.”
And as well as other media attention, the eight-year-old has attracted poetry from a Radio 2 blogger. Jan said several people from Radio 2’s Simon Mayo’s blog have been following the swim and sending donations. But one, Anglesey woman “Billie on the Blog”, sent a poem with her donation.
Jan said: “He opened it when he got back from school, just a couple of hours before he started his final stretch. It couldn’t have been timed more perfectly. What a lovely thing for someone to do.”
The online donation page will be open for another few weeks and anyone wanting to donate should visit www.justgiving.com/Ivans-Channel-Swim or text IVAN77 £5 to 70070 to donate £5 (or change the £5 to the required donation amount), or send a cheque, made payable to Selkirk Scout Group and marked with Ivan’s Channel Swim plus your name and address on the back to Ivan’s Channel Swim, Selkirk Scout Group, c/o 1 Murison Hill, Selkirk, TD7 5AP.
Ode to Ivan
There’s a special boy named Ivan, He’s only eight years old
And, though he’s small in stature, He’s gallant, brave and bold.
He’s swimming ’cross the Channel, Length by length by length.
The thought of it exhausts me!Where does he get the strength?
He’s raising lots of money, To fix the Scout Hut roof.
A hero is this Ivan –A Hero! That’s the truth!
