Be grateful for Jedburgh’s historic court

As one who walks almost daily through the Market Square in Jedburgh, I was surprised by the suggestion by an anonymous letter-writer in last week’s Southern Reporter that a change to the entrance to the Sheriff Court might lead tourists to think worse of our town.

I have never seen, even on days when the court is functioning, scenes such as might cause offence.

I would suggest that we should be glad that Jedburgh is still a living and working town, not a museum-piece, and that most of us are proud that we still retain an active and historic sheriff court, even if we might not approve of some of its clientele.
