Also new at the overhauled High Street store are a home entertainment section, Costa Coffee point and self-service tills.

Calum Megson, the store’s manager for the last two years, said: “We are delighted to be undertaking such a significant investment in Jedburgh, and we’re confident that the improvements will help us to better serve the community.

“It’s an exciting time for the whole team.”

Michael McCarthy, the Manchester-based nationwide chain’s regional manager, added: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum.

“Our ambition is to ensure the store is a local hub, a real asset for the community.

“We also want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op.

“Our members make a difference locally, and simply by swiping their membership card when they shop with us, they are raising much-needed funding for organisations in their area who contribute to improving local life.”

That membership scheme will raise funds for Jedburgh’s Laidlaw Memorial Pool and the Jedforest Instrumental Band, as well as Bauer Radio’s Cash for Kids charity.

Members get a 5% reward when buying own-branded products, and the Co-op donates a further 1% to its chosen good causes.

Other good causes hoping to benefit from the chain’s community have until Sunday, April 8, to apply for stakes in its next handout.
