DUBBED by Whispering Bob Harris as amazing, Hillfolk Noir will come to Eastgate Theatre in June, writes Flora Colton.
The former Old Grey Whistle Test and Radio 2 presenter came across the Americana band earlier this year and he continued to play tracks from the band’s ninth album, Radio Hour, over and over like a broken record. The legendary TV and radio presenter is “determined to catch the band live.”
The American band stood out as one of the outstanding highlights at this year’s festival South by South West in Austin, Texas.
Skinny Mammy’s Revenge, authorised the band as a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the Atlantic. One reviewer described them as: “It’s A swampy, bluegrassy, gospel-tinged, Depression-era prayer meeting medicine show of warped ragtime delta hillbilly blues/folk/country.”
The UK tour, which comes to Eastgate Theatre, on Wednesday, June 13 will be the tenth gig of their first tour to the country.
Band leader and main song-writer Travis Ward said: “It’s particularly great to be playing at the Eastgate Theatre as we’ve heard from our good friends, The Hot Seats and The Wilders, the audience likes it old-time America.
“It sounds like they get in a party mood and that suits us fine!” Ward gos on to say: “We basically make the music for ourselves because we love it. We sing and play our guts out- every song.”
Other reviewers have described them as: “One of the most incredible bands” and “roots music with attitude.”
The gig begins at 7.30pm with tickets, priced at £13. For further information, phone 01721 725777.
