A&E is for emergency use only, says NHS

The health board has launched a public awareness campaign ahead of next week’s public holiday on April to remind people that A&E is for serious and life threatening illness and injury only.

Leaflets have been made available at pharmacies, health centres, community hospitals and the BGH to explain the most appropriate place for advice and treatment.

Evelyn Rodger, director for nursing, midwifery and acute services at NHS Borders, said: “Often we see people coming to A&E when they would have been more appropriately cared for by the pharmacist, GP or dentist.

“Knowing which NHS service to use, and when, is important to ensure you get quick access to the right treatment.”

Dr Annabel Howell, associate medical director for primary, acute and community services added: “Selecting the right service to meet your needs can lead to increased patient satisfaction and a speedier recovery. Choosing the wrong service can lead you to experience delays and ultimately become frustrated and dissatisfied.

“So please take some time to find out which services are available.”
