‘A relief that they phoned’

Robert and Beryl Barbour of Crailinghall near Jedburgh were on a month’s tour of New Zealand and visited Christchurch for a day on Tuesday, before heading to Thailand.

Son Graham said: “They were in the centre of Christchurch in a restaurant having lunch when the earthquake struck.

“They are OK and stayed with friends on Tuesday night and made their scheduled flight out of New Zealand on Wednesday.

“It was a relief that they phoned us fairly quickly. It is the first time they have been to New Zealand and probably the only day they will spent in Christchurch in their lives.”
