Melrose makes UK’s tranquil top three

Melrose has been named as the third most tranquil place in the UK.

Apparently the town is the third most tranquil spot in the whole of the UK, according to new research by a team at Delamere Health, Cheshire.

It’s clear the judges did not come to the town during Sevens Saturday, but you can see where they are coming from.

And if Melrose isn’t tranquil enough, you don’t have far to travel to get to number one … it’s North Berwick in East Lothian.

The study, which looked into the country’s top staycation destinations, ranked 30 of the most popular UK towns based on the number of relaxing facilities available.

North Berwick topped the list with an overall index score of 57. Ilkley, Yorkshire, followed in second place with 51, followed by Melrose with 50.

Leaderdale and Melrose Councillor David Parker wasn’t surprised.

He told The Southern: “It’s marvellous news that Melrose has been voted the third most tranquil place to stay in Scotland.

"Melrose is a fantastic town with a rich variety of small local independent shops along with some of the best hospitality businesses the Scottish borders has to offer.

"The environment of Melrose is steeped in natural history and it’s a great place for walking, cycling, equestrian activities and a whole variety of different sports.

"There are many voluntary groups in the community who work incredibly hard to safeguard Melrose and also provide events and facilities for local people to enjoy.

"The town is extremely welcoming to the many tourists who visit each year and is one of the jewels in the crown of the Scottish Borders.

He continued: “It’s no surprise that Melrose has been recognised for this latest accolade.

"The town continually wins awards for being a wonderful place to live and work and I think the one good thing that’s come out of Covid is all of us in the Scottish Borders have a renewed appreciation of our fantastic surroundings and environment.

"This summer the new Trimintium museum will open in Melrose, providing a fantastic facility for locals and tourists, and with other exciting developments planned in the community, Melrose will simply become an even better place to live in the years ahead.”
