Newtown Gala Week was blessed with the best weather it had had in years in the summer of 1988. One of the highlights of the week for youngsters was the “It’s a Knockout” competition, where one of the obstacles was a slippery soapy slope. More than 80 children had a go on the watery obstacle course ... the sun soon dried them off!

Also in 1988, a solemn moment for that year’s Jethart Callant, Mark Spence, as he and his right and left-hand men, Brian Lyall and Richie Nagle, laid a wreath at Jedburgh War Memorial. That year also saw the first of a new tradition, when Lisa Chisholm, 14, was chosen as the first Jedburgh Games Committee Festival Queen.
