Nostalgia: New Year’s Day cricket

Cricket is a sport normally associated with summer months.

However, players braved the cold, damp and even snow showers at St Boswells on New Year’s Day 1987 to raise money for the Edinburgh Western General kidney unit appeal. It was the third annual New Year clash between the village team and Kelso, with the Tweedsiders taking a 2-1 lead in the Ne’erday series. The charity cash was raised through sponsorship, and was a new record, beating the £1,200 raised the previous year.
