Fundraisers go all out for a cause

Rugby stars John Jeffrey and Doddie Weir were among around 170 cyclists who took to Borders byways in May 1994 to raise funds for the charity Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.

The 20-mile route started at Melrose Rugby Club and took in roads around Bowden, Selkirk, Abbotsford and Galashiels before finishing at the Greenyards.

Also in 1994, the Pavilion bingo club took part in a more unusual fundraising event – underwater bingo.

Held in Galashiels swimming pool, the event attracted around 25 spectators and players, and was one of several initiatives organised to raise money for sick children’s charity the Starlight Foundation.
