It's finally time for Seeyouatmidnight to head off into the Borders sunset

Seeyouatmidnight, possibly the most familiar name at Sandy Thomson’s Kelso stables, has been retired for the second and last time.

The 13-year-old bay gelding is carrying a small, non-serious injury, but his handler feels it’s time now to ease him over to the sidelines.

“He’s picked up a small injury so we’re just not going to go on any more, although it’s nothing serious,” said Thomson.

“He owes us nothing and, obviously, he’d have to do a lot of miles to get back with it next winter. We just decided that was enough.”

Seeyouatmidnight won on his debut at Hexham in 2013 and landed the Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock in 2014 and the 2016 Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham, as well as coming third in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr that year.

He also finished 11th in the 2018 Randox Grand National at Aintree before being retired initially in December that year.

However, he was back in business in February 2020, scoring at Carlisle on his second return outing.

He has run twice this season and bounced back from being pulled up at Haydock to celebrate the new year in style by winning the Veterans' Chase Series Final at Sandown on January 2, his final start.

Thomson tweeted: “We have taken the decision to retire our superstar Seeyouatmidnight. He’s given us so many great days and we owe so much to him. He’s gone out on a high, having won the veterans’ final at Sandown – and this time his retirement is definite.”
