NOSTALGIA: Selkirk Common Riding in 1995

Selkirk was granted its wish for a smilin’ morn this week in 1995 as thousands of spectators turned out on a glorious summer day for its annual common riding.

Royal burgh standard bearer Duncan Stewart led a mounted cavalcade of more than 400 riders around the burgh marches on what he described as “the proudest day of my life”. “It’s been a fantastic day. The support of the people has been brilliant and the weather excellent. The only thing wrong with it is that it’s all over far too soon,” he told the Southern during a reception following the casting of the colours in Market Place.
