Support worker Catherine is honoured with top award

A care worker whose dedication to setting an example to those she works with has seen her sign up for a weight-loss challenge, has been recognised at the Great British Care Awards.

Support worker Catherine Khan, of Jedburgh, has been awarded the Care Home Workers Award at the 2019 Great North East and Scotland Care Awards.

She works for Gateshead social care charity Community Integrated Care at her home town’s Priors Court extra-care housing complex, received that accolade in recognition for her going the extra mile for the people she supports.

“Catherine demonstrated the achievements that she has supported other to have,” a spokesman for the judging panel said. “She has gone above and beyond to help her service users.

“She has encouraged several service users to lose weight and even joined Slimming World herself to support them with this.”

Catherine’s employer Community Integrated Care is one of Britain’s largest health and social care charities. It supports over 3,500 people nationally who have learning disabilities, mental health concerns, autism and dementia, employing 6,500 staff.

The charity was also recognised with the Housing with Care Award for its management of the Priors Court 20-flat facility which provides supported living to people in Jedburgh.

Community Integrated Care managing director Allison Cochran said: “It’s fantastic to see the exceptional work of our colleagues being recognised at this year’s Great British Care Awards.

“All our nominees show every day their commitment and passion for delivering world-class support, and they deserve every accolade awarded to them.

“I’m so proud of all our colleagues and teams who have been recognised at tonight’s ceremony for making such a difference to the lives of the people they support.”

The awards, which took place at the Grand Hotel in Gosforth Park in Newcastle, are part of the Great British Care Awards, a series of regional awards which celebrate excellence in the social care sector.

As a winner Catherine will now go forward to the national finals of the Great British Care Awards, taking place in Birmingham’s International Conference Centre in March 2020.
