Downhill racers in winter wonderland

Carefree youngsters from Jedburgh escaped from their X-Box consoles for a few precious hours at the weekend as a town park was transformed into a sledging paradise.

Heavy snowfall on Friday into Saturday enabled dozens of youngsters to take their sledges out at Allerley Well Park, known locally as High Park.

Happily, families who descended on the hilly location adhered to social distancing regulations.

Current Scottish government coronavirus guidelines ask people to avoid crowded places, with a maximum of six people from two separate households able to meet.

It was a rare opportunity for youngsters to enjoy a glimpse of normality amongst the doom and gloom of the current lockdown.

And our photographer Bill McBurnie was on hand to capture the fun for posterity.

He said: “The kids were having a ball. They made the most of the snow on the Friday and Saturday because by the Sunday it had started to thaw and the snow was gone.

“People were telling me that it was great for the youngsters to get some fresh air and to get away from their X-Box for a few precious hours.

“They were doing what kids should be doing - having fun.

“I would say that basically every slope in Jedburgh, whether it be at High Park, Sharplaw Hill or Heartrig Hill, was being utilised by the kids to do some sledging.”
