The centre, at Langlee Community Centre, opened on Saturday, January 9, and operates seven days a week, with appointments available from 8am-8pm.
All extra Covid-19 testing outside the NHS is being operated by the UK Government, in support of Scotland’s own health services.
Dr Tim Patterson, director of public health at NHS Borders, said: “NHS Borders welcomes the widening of access to Covid-19 testing with the community testing facility operating seven days a week in Galashiels from January 9.
“This is a significant enhancement which will allow easier access to testing and also allows for flexibility to deploy the current mobile testing unit, which operates part-time in Galashiels to other towns in our area if required.
“It is more important than ever that people showing any symptoms of Covid-19 must self-isolate and book a test immediately.”
Tests must be booked in advance at: www.nhsinform.scot/test-and-protect or by calling 0800 028 2816.
The opening of the new testing centre has been welcomed by local MP, John Lamont.
He said: “It is great news that the UK Government has opened a new walk-through testing centre at Langlee Community Centre in Galashiels.“Testing is a really important part of managing the virus as it helps to identify those who are positive and stop further spread."
