Vintage day as sun shines on Springwood

SUNDAY’S fine weather came as a blessing for the organisers of the Borders Vintage Agricultural Association’s rally at Springwood Park in Kelso.

Chairman Charlie McCririck admitted they were extremely concerned following Friday’s heavy rain.

But he told us: “It cleared away and Sunday was brilliant. Our gate money was up by £1,500 – it seems people just wanted to get out and do something because of the fantastic sunshine. We certainly scored.”

Exhibits were on a par with last year – around 150 tractors, 100 cars, 50 bikes and 30 heavy and light commercial vehicles. The number of trade stands were down, probably a result of the financial climate.

But the day was hailed a success. Charlie told us: “Our name probably sounds a bit dreary and people might think it’s just about old men and old machines. But we are getting the message across that we really have something for everybody.”

This year the association has donated £2,303 to the Margaret Kerr Palliative Care Unit appeal.
