At their weekly sale of primestock last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 601 hoggs and 272 ewes.

Hogg numbers tighter but all classes easily sold to show substantial rises on the week, more could easily be handled.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 90 clean cattle, 62 OTM cattle, 1,756 old season lambs and 528 ewes.

Bullocks (38) averaged 209p per kg and sold to 244p (n/c on week, heifers (51) averaged 216.9p per kg and sold to 247p (-4.3p on week), 62 beef type OTM cattle averaged 135.1p per kg and sold to 211p (+7.0p on the week) and one young bull sold to 150p.

The old season SQQ lambs averaged 204.1p per kg (+2.7p on week) and sold to £106 and ewes averaged £58.91 and sold to £100. Heavy ewes £66.47, light ewes £49.20.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 24 prime cattle, three young bulls, 22 over 30 month cattle, 5,818 prime hoggs and 3,309 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A plain show of prime cattle forward with mainly dairy bred sorts on offer saw trade maintain last weeks rates.

More quality sorts needed. Top price to 211.5p for a Limousin bullocks shown by K.W. Coulthard and Partners,

Bulls also sold to similar trade topping at 215.5p from Messrs J.P. Lee, Morley Hill.

Mainly hill cows on offer met a good trade topping at 147.5p for a Luing cow shown by John Higgs Farms. Cast bulls sold to 131.5p for a Limousin from J.A. and D. Forster, Gillalees.

A much larger show of 5,818 prime hoggs (1,207 lightweights) were forward to the usual full ringside of buyers, another fantastic show of hoggs saw all best quality export weights dearer on the week with heavy hoggs also in stronger demand, more light hoggs forward and sold at recent high rates, Blackface and Mule hoggs £2 or £3 firmer on the week. The overall sale average was 196.2p per kilo (SQQ 199.1p per kilo). Top was £106 per head for Beltex from Hitchell Farm.
