Fighting against fascism in Spain

Performed at The Maltings, Berwick, on Friday, March 3, the play captures the raw passions and emotions of idealism and despair through powerful storytelling, stirring songs, poetry and puppetry.

Set in Spain in 1936 featuring Clem ‘Dare Devil’ Beckett - one of the most brilliant riders in the very early days of Speedway Dirt Track Racing. Beckett, stirred by the Spaniards’ determination to defend themselves against Franco’s rising fascist army, joins the International Brigade.

Not for nothing did he earn the name, ‘Dare Devil’. Loved for his great daring, courage and skill on the speedway track, Beckett was a man of the people, and the same fight he used against money-sharks and corruption in his sport, he used to defend democracy against Franco’s rising fascist army.

He formed an unlikely friendship with literary critic, writer and poet Christopher Caudwell and they died at their machine gun post covering their battalion’s retreat at the Battle of Jarama in February 1937.
