Selkirk pupils’ designs set for capital stage

Creative Fashion in the Scottish Borders will be open from 9-5pm, Monday to Friday, in the society’s premises at 9 Fountain Close, just off the Royal Mile.

The garments on display are the result of a 34-week long course undertaken by students from Selkirk High and Galashiels Academy which saw pupils creating upcycled outfits and accessories inspired by the Borders heritage of wool, tartan and tweed.

The course is co-ordinated by Clair Hood and Liz Parkes, from Creative Borders in Education, who also arrange the annual Creative Fashion Show at Selkirk High, held this year on March 26. Clair said: “The aim of the course is to share with pupils the importance of our national textile industry. They are also given the opportunity to develop their creativity and practical abilities, as well as increasing their self-confidence and presentation, leadership and team-working skills.”

Liz added: “In previous years, the fashion show has been the main chance for them to show off their stunning and highly-imaginative creations. Being approached to showcase our work at a national level is a new and hugely exciting venture for everyone involved and we are delighted that our students are being given this additional opportunity.”

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, executive member for education at Scottish Borders Council (SBC), said: “The importance of the textile industry to the history and economy of our region is well known and documented. What is new and exciting is the way in which these young people are connecting with it through their own creativity and the opportunities made available to them during their involvement with the project. I wish them every success.”
