Golden opportunity to saddle up and support local artists

Two equine sculptures gilded in 24 carat gold are amongst the works going on sale as part of a special online auction on June 25, organised by Jedburgh auction house, Brown & Turner and the Borders Art Fair to help contemporary artists from the Scottish Borders and beyond who have been unable to use galleries and events to sell their work for several months.

More than 170 works by 48 artists, many of whom have taken part in the Borders Art Fair, will be featured in the auction, which will offer the artists access to UK-wide and international markets through Brown & Turner’s online sales platforms.

A special commission rate has been arranged to ensure that the artists are supported as much as possible.

The two golden horse sculptures are by award-winning Borders equine and figurative sculptor Frippy Jameson.

Drum Horse in Gold (pictured above) is a bronze patinated in Carmine, gilded in 24 carat European gold and mounted on Portland stone.

The gold and Carmine reflect the uniforms of the Household Cavalry Drumhorse.

Racehorse in Gold, another bronze, has been patinated in Carmine and gilded in 24 carat gold leaf, reflecting the combination of the fragility and strength of racehorses, overlaid by the enormous value placed on them.

Individual estimates for the work to be sold at the auction range from £100 to £9,000.

Ronan Brown from Brown & Turner said: “Like many businesses, the art community is having to think differently about how its members can make a living.

“Galleries and event-based sales opportunities have unfortunately been unavailable for many weeks, but we hope that our UK-wide and international sales platforms will open up new channels for the artists and give them another way to make a living in these challenging times.”

An online catalogue detailing each of the pieces for sale will be available from www.brownandturner.co.uk from Friday, June 5, and more information on the work can be obtained by calling 01835 863445.

Borders Art Fair Director, Frances Fergusson, said; “Some incredible artistic talent exists in the Borders and surrounding areas so we hope that as well as providing a way for the artists to sell their work, this special online auction will also help to raise the profile of the region’s contemporary artists to a much larger audience.”
