Have your say

The legendary songwriter Boo Hewerdine is String Jam Club’s first headline artist of 2016, appearing at the County Hotel in Selkirk on Saturday January 16.

His consummately crafted songs have established him as “one of Britain’s most consistently accomplished songwriters” and don’t just take our word for it.

A regular collaborator with Eddi Reader over many years, his melodic and deceptively simple songs have also been covered by such greats as k d lang, Chris Difford, Kris Drever, Jerry Douglas, Paul Young, Natalie Imbruglia and Mary Chapin Carpenter, to name but a few.

Boo’s eventful career spans three decades, starting off behind the counter in a record shop, but going on to play with some acclaimed bands (notably The Bible), and currently his back catalogue contains numerous solo and collaborative albums (including recordings with bands The Bible and State of the Union), EPs, singles, film and television soundtracks (including Nick Hornby’s film adaptation of his book ‘Fever Pitch’), and a vast amount of production work for other leading artists.

Boo’s best-loved song, the Eddie Reader-voiced ‘Patience of Angels’ was nominated for the Ivor Novello Award in 1995.

His 2014 career retrospective release ‘My Name in Brackets’ received rave reviews, including four stars in the Daily Express, and Folk Radio UK’s Album of the Month Award. His most recent album ‘Open’ on Reveal Records is a collection of unreleased recordings, all carrying the unmissable signature Hewerdine hallmarks: craft, emotion, melody and pure quality.

In the words of BBC Music, Boo writes “classic, melody-driven songs which would have been gobbled up by Tin Pan Alley in another era – a soothing antidote to the frantic madness of modern times.”

Boo’s production skills are also in great demand and he has collaborated with Eddi Reader, Heidi Talbot, The Corrs, Jake Cogan and Chris Difford. Is there no end to this musician’s skills?

Not only a songwriter, recording artist and producer of great renown, Boo is also a live performer par excellence whose shows are simply packed with wonderful warmth, wit and emotional depth.

Boo will be supported by special guests and friends, the fast-rising band Dark Green Tree, whose immaculate debut album ‘Secret Lives’ was produced by none other than Boo himself and not only earned an 8/10 rating in Uncut Magazine but also has been described as “a blissful debut by this skilful UK Americana trio” in a Maverick 5-star review.

String Jam Club welcomes everyone who loves music, and this show offers you nothing short of the best.

If you haven’t see Boo Hewerdine before, here’s your chance to experience “one of the UK’s finest lyricists” live and up close at the venue dubbed “the Borders haven of music” by The List, and voted the second best gig in the UK by the Guardian.

Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now, priced £14, from the County Hotel, and are bookable by phone on 01750 721233. See String Jam Club’s Facebook page for more details.
