Celebrating skiffle’s great pioneer

THE music of the king of skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, will be remembered next weekend at Peebles’ Eastgate Theatre.

A raw blend of blues and folk music with roots in black America, the genre swept Britain in the late 1950s and inspired thousands of teenagers, including John Lennon whose skiffle outfit, The Quarrymen, evolved into The Beatles. Donegan was the first British artist to conquer the US pop charts, heralding a new age in British pop.

His talents are recalled in this show that celebrates all things skiffle, presented by the Seaside Skiffle Group fronted by veteran folk-rock duo Wales O’Regan.

Remembering Lonnie Donegan is on Saturday, August 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £13 from 01721 725777.
