The 2014 Hawick Cornet was presented to the town on Friday amid great excitement.

Ross Andrew Gibson, 24, said his appointment was the realisation of a lifelong ambition, and he is honoured to follow in the long list of cornets who have gone before. He cannot wait to lead this year’s Common Riding.

Ross, an electrician with SBHA, was cheered on by his proud parents, Andrew and Rhona Gibson, and his younger sister, Laura, 21.

Ross first followed Cornet Greg McLeod in 2003 and, in the same year, gained his Mosstroopers’ Badge. He has followed every cornet since and enjoys participating at other Border festivals. His mount for this year’s Common Riding is his own horse, George, a 13-year-old chestnut gelding.

His Lass is Michelle Paxton. Michelle is honoured to be Cornet’s Lass for 2014 and hopes she will make her family and friends proud.

The Cornet’s Acting Father and Mother for 2014 are Alan and Jane Gray.

They have been married for 13 years and have three children – Rebecca, 10, Carly, 8, and Oliver, 3, who are keen supporters of the Common Riding and are very proud and excited for this year.

Alan is employed as a clerk of works for SBHA and is also a retained firefighter.

Acting Mother Jane is a lecturer at Borders College.

Alan and Jane are very honoured and proud to be part of Ross and Michelle’s very special year and wish them and everyone else a fantastic Common Riding.
