Don’t think of this as a not-quite-but-maybe rom com.

Don’t think of this as a not-quite-but-maybe rom com.

A teacher – Pat (excellent Bradley Cooper) – is discharged from the loony bin in order to win back his wife.

Diagnosed bi-polar, he should be on medication, but isn’t, because the pills make him feel like a zombie. The only one who understands is Tiffany (Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence), the girl next door.

Superbly written by director David O. Russell, the film is too intelligent to be pigeon-holed. Cliches are cut off at the knees because Tiffany is too unpredictable to be classified as zany, or feisty, and Pat could implode at any moment. Original and absorbing, Silver Linings defies its sentimental yearnings and plays hardball with your emotions.
