Nights at the opera

The Borders’ opera season begins straight away this year with a performance of Les Troyens, beamed live from New York’s Metropolitan Opera House into the Pavilion Cinema in Galashiels on Saturday.

Les Troyens is a French grand opera in five acts by Hector Berlioz, composed between 1856 and 1858.

The show starts at 5pm, tickets cost ÂŁ26/ÂŁ22, and you can book/buy your seat at 01896 752767.

Les Troyens is followed by a performance of La Boheme by the Royal Opera on Tuesday, January 15, at 7.15pm, streamed live from London’s Covent Garden to the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles.

“Teeming with period detail, John Copley’s definitive production of this much-loved opera is traditional opera at its best,” writes a theatre publicist: “Puccini’s wintery tale of the joy and heartbreak of young love is an unforgettable treat featuring glorious melodies.”

The Royal Opera, based in the iconic Covent Garden theatre, is renowned for its outstanding performances of both traditional opera as well as commissioning new works.

Tickets cost ÂŁ17, which you can reserve on 01721 725777.

The operas keep coming after the Peebles Proms, with five more shows at the Pavilion Cinema: Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda on January 19; Verdi’s Rigoletto on February 16; Wagner’s Parsifal on March 2; Francesca da Rimini by Zandonai on March 16; and Handel’s Giullio Cesare on April 27.
