LAST Wednesday, fundraiser Claire Oliver of the Margaret Kerr Unit at Borders General Hospital was in Hawick for the practice session of the Hawick PSA Male Voice Choir, to receive a cheque for £2,500 for the appeal.
The choir mounted a fundraising event in Hawick Town Hall on November 2, and among the hit songs aired that night was ‘Money, Money, Money’.
The words of the Abba song, sung by the choir, Joyce Tinlin and Debbie Lyons to open the show, proved prophetic as last week Ms Oliver announced the Margaret Kerr public appeal had raised the £4.1million it needed to help build the Borders General Hospital’s new palliative care unit, which is due to open in the spring.
Claire thanked the 26-strong choir and the musical director Ann Witherington and pianist Lyndon Warburton for their efforts, and the giant cheque was handed over to the unit by president Billy Jardine who said: “It was a pleasure to raise the money for such a good cause which will benefit the whole Borders, and I have to thank all who helped at the concert, both on stage and behind the scenes.”
