After being welcomed into Scotland at Coldstream Bridge, the Queen’s Baton Relay returned to the Borders on June 18.

Its first stop was Duns before making its way across the Borders, heading for Earlston, Melrose, Tweedbank, Selkirk, Kelso, Jedburgh and Hawick.

Among the baton carriers in Jedburgh was veteran running coach Brian ‘Chico’ Woods.

“I felt about seven foot tall when I got handed the baton,” said Chico, who ran the leg from the town’s war memorial to the swimming pool, where he handed the baton on to rugby legend, Roy Laidlaw.

“It was a great honour to be selected and recognised for doing something,” he added.

“My only gripe is that folk running at the start, at the woollen mill section, had nobody lining the route to cheer them on.

“That should’ve been better planned and it would’ve been nice if there had been something similar to Hawick where they had music and a real party atmosphere – after all, most of us will never see this again in our lifetimes.”
