At a World United Martial Arts blackbelt grading held in Cheltenham, Niall Cameron, 22, from Galashiels, was awarded his 1st Dan/Degree blackbelt in kickboxing and self-defence.

Niall, who has trained with Borders Martial Arts for the last eight years, is also a keen member of the Territorial Army and last year was proud to serve a six-month tour in Afghanistan.

Since returning home he has trained hard to be able to achieve his blackbelt goal.

Niall is keeping up family traditions as his father, Neil, served in the Army and also achieved his blackbelt several years ago.

Anyone interested in learning a martial art should contact chief instructor John Wilson on 07974 533127, search on Facebook or come along to any of the classes in Coldstream Community Centre (Tuesdays, 7-8pm), Langlee Primary School (Wednesdays, 7-8pm) and Duns Swimming Pool Hall (Thursdays, 7-9pm).
