Students teach Fairies a lesson

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 3 GALA FAIRYDEAN 0 PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY Keith Anderson reports from Peffermill

Gala Fairydean paid the penalty for some slack defending in the closing stages of this pre-season friendly against the students of Edinburgh University, conceding two avoidable goals in the final four minutes.

The scoreline did not truly reflect the efforts of Gala who, although they trailed 1 - 0 at half-time, were denied by a series of fine saves by the University goalkeeper, Mark Tait.

Jack Beesley, the former Kelso United player, was a constant thorn in the Gala defence and Elliott Turnbull did well to save two net bound shots. At the other end Jamie Gibson tested Tait but it was the University who took the lead three minutes before the break when when an in-swinging corner from Beesley was slotted into the net at the front post by Michael Dick.

The introduction of Des Sutherland at half-time breathed new life into the Gala attack and he had two shots held by Tait while Scott McKenzie, with some foraging runs, also tested the students goalkeeper with two excellent low crosses. Paul Hossack almost grabbed a deserved equaliser when he was left with only Tait to beat but again the custodian matched the striker's effort with a blocking save.

There were only four minutes left when former Vale of Leithen player Phil Johnson steered home a Neil Irvine cross after Gala tried to pass the ball out of the danger zone, then in the dying seconds Jordan Roberts poked in the third after a goalmouth scramble.

Fraser Lothian, the Gala manager, was not too disappointed, saying:"The scoreline did not really reflect the game. In the second half we deserved an equaliser before we gave away two bad goals. Overall, it was another good workout for the players."
