Have your say

Jed-Forest Athletics Club members started season 2013 with the usual hopeful expectations.

And they found, after a lengthy 17 meetings throughout the Borders and Highlands, that they exceeded them all and amassed an amazing 27 wins, 26 seconds, 25 thirds and 40 fourth, fifth and sixth positions in finals – obviously a season to remember.

Coach Brian ‘Chico’ Woods, along with his helpers and sponsors, Scott Elliot and Ozkans Fast Food, would like to congratulate the above team for their honest hard work and endeavour during the season.

“As coach, I would just like to say there have been more than a few notable performances from individuals, but I see it more as a disciplined team effort, winning being the bonus,” said Chico.

“Well done all for season 13, it was certainly not unlucky.”

Anyone interested in participating in club athletics can get in touch with Chico on 07870 775168.

SPORTING DIGEST

Bowling

Earlston

Last week saw the ladies host their highly popular Ladies’ Day, with a full house of 24 pairs taking part.

The fine weather matched the hotly-contested ties and after winning through the group stage and semi-final, Melrose duo Maureen Graham and Margaret Aitken beat the home pairing of Gail Moffatt and Anne Falconer to lift the trophy for the second year running.

President Bob Beattie presented the trophy and congratulated the ladies on hosting yet another successful tournament. He also thanked the gents who helped out with kitchen duties, and long-suffering competition secretary George Cessford, who ensured the competition ran smoothly throughout.

Galashiels

League action is now restricted to the Tuesday Triples League, and in the past week there have been two matches played.

The away match at Peebles turned out to be close and Gala managed to win by a single shot, while a home match against Buccleuch ended in a draw.

In the Open Fours event, the Tweedbank team of Jim Craig, Moira Blyth, Mel Blyth and Rob Fulton beat John Manzcak’s team from the Abbotsford club. The club is indebted to A & A Doyle, Funeral Directors, for its generous sponsorship.

Hawick

Hawick ventured over to Gala to play Abbotsford in the Seniors League and came away with a good result, winning by 54-39.75. Top rink for Hawick was Alec Wilson; J.H. Reilly and T. Anderson.

Saturday saw the club host the Stuart Thomson Memorial Open Pairs with a good turnout of 22 duos.

In the final, Les Clarkson and Bill Anderson played Wullie Wells and Graham Lyall, with the former winning by 12- 9. The club would like to thank Jimmy Thomson and his family for sponsoring this event in memory of their son Stuart.

Langholm

The Langholm New Town bowling club held its Open Pairs last Saturday in rather cool weather.

Mother and son pairing Carolle and Paul Warwick from the host club won for the second time in a week, having secured the trophy at the Old Town the previous Sunday. In the final they beat the Old Town pair of Colin Turk and Gavin Graham. There was an entry of 18 and the tournament was sponsored by the Langholm Royal British Legion Club and the chairman Roger McMurdo presented the Tom Bell Memorial Trophy to the winners.
