Hawick YM 25
NATIONAL SHIELD FIRST ROUND
the Redskins were in total control for the first 10 minutes – Lee Armstrong scored his 11th try of the season, taking him over the 200 points barrier.
When Irvine started to come more into the game, the reliable YM defence held firm.
The Skins were producing some excellent rugby and Shaun Desport shot over in the corner for his first try of the game and a few minutes before half-time he crossed again. Both went unconverted, and in between these scores Irvine slotted a penalty, leaving the Teries with a 3-15 lead at the break.
Straight from the restart, Irvine’s try brought them right back into the match, and YM hooker Garry Douglas was given a straight red card for retaliation with 32 minutes left.
Irvine took advantage by pushing the visiting pack all over the park. However, a leg injury to Ross Taylor left YM with no front row cover and the final quarter was played out with uncontested scrums, much to the disdain of the Irvine support.
The game was on a knife-edge until Armstrong slotted a penalty and with two minutes to go Shaun Desport crossed for his third try, converted by Armstrong. YM march into round two and will play Annan this weekend at Mansfield Haugh.
