Winless Teries look forward to Border League ... with some trepidation

Hawick 8

Glasgow Hawks 23

PREMIER DIVISION ONE

ATHOLL INNES reports from Mansfield Park

HOPES were high that Hawick would end their unbelievable losing run at the expense of the club just above them in the top flight.

Instead, they were left with even more problems … winless and coachless. Now, the club is hoping that the cup and Border League will bring relief and less stress.

Perhaps – committee members and fans are not too sure of that.

The speculation that Hawick would turn the corner was raised after Gary Johnstone kicked an early penalty.

But Hawks, under former internationalist Peter Wright, turned their own corner to leave Hawick anchored at the foot of the table.

Winning at Hawick is almost never easy – but this season it hasn’t been exactly difficult with five defeats and one solitary draw, and that against a Stirling County side which has pulled its way into the top half of the league.

Skipper Bruce McNeil was realistic.

He said: “The coaches (Jim Renwick and Rocky Johnstone) are not to blame. The players need to be more consistent,” he said.

“There are no ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ about it – we need to improve, even if it means extra training.”

They certainly worked hard, but there was a lack of confidence with dropped passes, knock-ons and a lack of penetration against a well-drilled Hawks side. For spells, Hawick were on the back foot and not even the presence of John Coutts, who scored their only try with Glasgow Hawks’ Bart Karalus in the sin-bin, could turn the tide.

The play continued to flow west as Hawks won their third game of the season and left Hawick stranded at the foot of the table.

Johnstone kicked Hawick ahead in 10 minutes, but by half-time trailed 3-20 as Mike Martin banged over two penalties and converted tries from George Hunter, who was driven over, and Ross Miller, who had the freedom of the park on the right touchline. Coutts restored hope for the Greens, only for Peter Jericevich to seal the points near the end with a penalty.
