PREMIER DIVISION TWO
Peebles dug deep to grind out this win on Saturday.
Hillhead had all the possession and territory in the opening stages and stand-off Gus Twaddle hit two penalties to put his side ahead.
Peebles fought back with a penalty and a converted try from Neil Warnock.
A quick tap penalty then sent the home defence scrambling and eventually Hillhead prop Will Marshall was cut down on his way to the pie stand, but unfortunately it was over the try-line. Twaddle converted. The reliable Warnock got another chance to square the scores at 13-13 just before half-time and made no mistake.
The first 15 minutes of the second period was an arm wrestle in the midfield before Peebles got a penalty 40m out. Warnock stepped up and drove it through the sticks to nudge his team back in front. Another penalty came shortly after, stretching the gap to 19-13.
Hillhead had a little fight left, though, and made it into Peebles territory. An overly enthusiastic attempt to stop them resulted in a yellow card for Peebles’ Andrew Brown and Twaddle popped over the penalty. But straight after this, the Tweeddale men were awarded another kickable penalty and Warnock brought his day’s total to 22 points, lifting his team out of the wooden spoon position into the bargain.
