A LONG, hard season ended on a high note for Selkirk Youth Club last weekend when they lifted the Under-18s title at the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens Festival.
Playing on Murrayfield’s back pitches, the Souters had an early star when they beat Dunfermline by 31-0 just after 10am (try scorers: Lewis MacLennan(2), Ross Purves, Callum McEwan, Kieran Monks, 2 conversions from Josh Welsh and one from Monks).
Next up was a 12-0 win over Deeside (try scorers: Harry Aynsley & Ross Purves, conversion, Welsh) and finally GHA were defeated 33-0 (try scorers: Thomas Penman, McEwan, Welsh (2) and Alan Smith, conversions, Welsh (3) and Smith.
On to the knock-out stages and next up was an strong Boroughmuir side. But Youth Club beat them 12-7 (try scorers: Penman and Monks, conversion from Welsh) to set up a semi-final tie against fellow Borders team Duns Colts, which they won by 10-0 (try scorers: McEwan and Welsh).
This meant a final against West of Scotland, who had defeated Hawick Wanderers in the other semi-final.
Selkirk won the final 31-5 to win the tournament (try scorers: Smith (4), Andrew Baxter (Duns), conversions Welsh (2), Smith).
It was good for the boys, but also a superb swansong for outgoing coach Cameron Cochrane.
