Tit-for-tat match goes against battling Gala

Dundee HSFP 34

Gala 28

PREMIER CUP

DESPERATE to get this Premier Cup game out of the way, the teams made the short trip across the Tay on Saturday to play at Station Park in St Andrews, home of Madras RFC, after Mayfield was deemed unplayable.

Gala’s match fitness was evident from the off and a Lee Miller kick and chase ended in a try for the visiting stand-off.

Dundee responded with some abrasive play resulting in some desperation in the Gala defence and an early yellow card reduced them to 14 men. The lack of numbers told and when James Fleming found himself with acres of space on the outside he took the opportunity to open Dundee’s account.

Jamie Urquhart converted to put the hosts ahead.

The template for the afternoon was set and Dundee and Gala swapped scores throughout the nailbiting contest.

Two more yellows, one to each side, were dished out at the end of the first quarter as tensions rose on the park.

Gala added a penalty through Millar to edge themselves ahead, but Dundee’s Harry Duthie collected a bouncing ball and managed to stretch over the line for Urquhart to convert and make the half-time score 14-8.

The Maroons started the second half as they had the first, with a score – a dynamic series of pick-and-goes on the line allowing David Marshall to push his way over, followed by a well-struck conversion from Millar from out wide.

Dundee responded with a try from Urquhart, but two minutes later the lead was reduced by another Miller penalty. Danny Levison then scored a try at full tilt, with Urquhart converting, to pull the hosts away again.

Gala refused to be shaken off and reacted sharply.

Dundee possession in the visitors’ 22 was intercepted by Mitch Walton, who ran the length of the park to score.

Urquhart notched another penalty and the closing 10 minutes saw a try apiece, the first to Gala, Miller touching down for a second to close the gap to a single point, before Dundee had the final say when Andy Linton went over from close range.
