The new Borders Semi Junior League kicked off in fine conditions on Saturday and if the action at the Glebe is anything to go by, this year’s campaign should be highly entertaining.
Thistle scored first with a penalty from Robbie Yourston before Robbie Douglas added a try to the home tally. Hawick hit back and, after some good play from their powerful forwards, scored a converted try.
Following good defence by the hosts the ball was cleared up field where it was gathered by Aiden Walker who went in under the posts for a try converted by Gary Munro to make it 15-7 at halftime.
The second half saw the Hawick forwards dominate possession with Thistle defending aggressively but it was Hawick, with two tries, who went ahead 17-15.
Persistence paid off for the hosts, however, and after a good run from fullback Calum McNeil, Robbie Yourston converted a penalty to edge the win.
