EIGHT Melrose players will start for the South of Scotland in their historic fixture against the world-famous Barbarians side at Mansfield Park, Hawick, on Tuesday, kick off 4pm, in aid of the Bill McLaren Foundation.
The team will be captained by Hawick Prop Bruce McNeil and is packed with the best club players from the Borders. Premier 1 teams from the area make up twelve of the starting side with Premier 2’s Jed-Forest contributing three players in winger Gregor Young, back row Darren Gillespie and prop Robert Ferguson.
A key battle will be up front where the Barbarians are expected to field experienced internationals fresh from the World Cup in 61 times capped Georgian Prop Goderzdi Shvelidze and Romanian Lock Valentin Poparlan.
Of the 22 in the squad, Melrose have the most with 10, Gala contribute four, Jed-Forest and Hawick have three each and there are one each from Selkirk and Peebles.
