FORMER Jed-Forest back Gregor Young is the only uncapped player selected for Scotland’s first outing in the IRB World 7s series in Australia on October 12.
Gregor, whose twin brother Lewis could not be considered due to a shoulder injury, has been a star on the Kings’ circuit in recent years. A factor which impressed Scotland Sevens coach Stephen Gemmell.
“Having played on the Borders circuit, Gregor is a powerful player who brings with him an option to play in the forwards or backs,” said Gemmell.
Young, 21, will make his first trip on the circuit, following his first outing with the team last weekend in the FIRA-AER tournament in Bucharest.
“It’s a big step up, but an opportunity I’ll grab with both hands,” he said.
“The team want to put in a good performance and show people what Scotland are all about.”
Joining Young in the squad will be fellow Borderers Mark Robertson (ex-Melrose) and John Houston, the former Hawick back.
Back in the Borders things are looking pretty quiet this weekend as Selkirk (v Biggar) and Peebles (v Hillhead Jordanhill) are the only home ties from the top three leagues. Turn to page 80 for full fixture list.
