Hawick girls Lisa Thomson and Lana Skeldon provided the only points for the Scottish ladies when they were defeated by their Italian counterparts yesterday.

Playing with muddy underfoot conditions at Stadio Arcoveggio in Bologna Italy scored three tries to Scotland’s one to claim the victory.

Scotland Women, who also include Jedburgh full-back Chloe Rollie, were gusty in defence and created plenty of opportunities in attack, but lacked discipline and finishing in what was a hard slog on the continent.

But the Scots held on to their belief for the full 80-minutes and stepped it up a gear in the second-half resulting in an interception try by centre Thomson, her first for Scotland, which hooker Skeldon converted with ease.

“The game itself was really physical and tough,” said Skeldon after the game.

“I felt like I got my hands on the ball a lot more and got a lot more involved, but it was a totally different game from the ones against England and Wales. The conditions totally changed the game for me.”

Three Six Nations games down however and the Scotland Women feel they are showing signs of what they are capable of under full-time Head Coach Shade Munro.

“We’re still building and trying to get the final boxes ticked,” added Skeldon.
