Melrose Ladies 71
WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
MELROSE bounced back from recent defeat with an outstanding display of team rugby on a wild and windy day at Myreside to inflict an 11-try rout on the deflated home side.
The bigger Watsonians side competed hard and won their fair share of possession throughout the match, but it was obvious from the start that they were going to have their hands full to contain a lively Melrose side who were on the scoreboard within minutes of kick-off.
A loose ball was sent quickly out to the wing and Lauren Harris ran in from 60m for the first of her five tries.
Tone set, Melrose continued to outrun and outpass their opponents at every opportunity and were 36-0 up by the break.
The second half saw a short revival from the home side as they pressured ’Rose back into their own half for a period, but they seemed devoid of ideas and relied solely on a few crashing runs from their heavyweights to gain territory.
Melrose absorbed the attacks and proceeded to run in a further five converted tries before ’Sonians found their only reward was to be a late try as their biggest forward found enough energy to bulldoze over from two metres out.
Involved in everything, Melrose’s player of the match was Hannah Rorrison on her first game back after long-term injury.
Melrose scorers: Lauren Harris (5), Gillian Inglis (2), Lana Skeldon, Maria Young, Lyndsey Gilchrist, Penalty try. Nicola Halfpenny converted seven and Lana Skeldon one.
