ALTHOUGH the rugby season has just finished, the Borders Rugby Referees’ Society (BRRS) is already planning for the 2011/12 campaign.

The society is looking to recruit new members and the first step is to attend a Level 1 refereeing course. Most clubs run junior sections and all games need to be refereed by a licensed official. Clubs need a good supply of people willing to referee these games and the course provides the licence to allow people to do this.

BRRS spokesman Graham Sutherland explained: “Many schools and clubs have parents who attend regularly to watch these levels of rugby and it is these parents we are hoping to encourage to take up the whistle to assist with these fixtures. Some of our more regular whistlers started at this level before moving up through the grades.”

For anyone interested in becoming a referee, a Level 1 course is being held on July 24 at Gala’s Netherdale ground, 9.30am-4pm. The course is free and people should contact Iain Heard on 07764 178926 or by email at iain.heard@sru.org.uk to register.
