PREMIER DIVISION TWO
STUART PATON reports from the Gytes
IN A must-win game for the home side, Peebles proved, for the first time this season, that they could play attractive rugby, and defend as well.
However, that was only the first half.
The home side produced some pretty fabulous stuff in what was almost a war of attrition between the rival clubs.
After some tetchy opening play from both teams, Peebles secured a ruck and spun the ball up the blindside. Andrew Brown dived over at the corner and Neil Warnock produced an excellent conversion.
Biggar came right back with some enterprising attacking rugby as they took the ball right inside the Pees’ 22, and were awarded a penalty. The touch judge then made a very observant call to the ref, the penalty was reversed and David Reive was sin-binned for stamping at the back of a ruck.
Play continued to rage, however, and Mike McKeand popped over a penalty to narrow the margin before Dale Clancy romped in to score to stretch the lead again, Warnock converting.
The Peebles stand-off was much involved in the next move also when he sent an up and under to David Paton, who picked up brilliantly.
The ball made its way to Alan Warnock, who dived over in the corner with Neil Warnock adding the conversion.
Peebles then hacked forward and Donald Anderson picked up to smash through the defence and touchdown, securing his team the bonus point and making the score 26-3 at half-time.
In a reversal of fortunes after the break, Biggar worked their way back into the game with tries from McKeand and Joe Scheres, one of which was converted,
Biggar continued to turn the screw and Mckeand bulleted in again, converting his own try, a 23-point gap was now narrowed to only six.
As the clock ticked down, the hosts dug deep, however, and following an offside offence at a ruck, Peebles got their chance to nail the win and Neil Warnock kicked the resulting penalty to secure his team a well-earned victory.
