Melrose scrape by on dreich day at Old Anniesland

Have your say

On an overcast day at Old Anniesland it took until 23 minutes before the scoreboard came to life to record a Joe Helps penalty.

On the half hour Melrose were awarded a series of penalties in the right corner and on each occasion they opted for the scrum. Eventually, not having been awarded a penalty try, they spun the ball wide to the left with Andrew Nagle crashing over for a try to the left of the posts, Helps converting to put his team 10-0 up at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half Hunter atoned for an earlier miss by slotting a penalty to put Hawks on the scoresheet. Both sides strove to increase their score, but as a result of knocks-on, aimless kicking to the opposition and stout defence by both teams there was no further scoring until 74 minutes when Hunter kicked his second penalty.
