Linden’s hard work takes them away from drop zone

NATIONAL DIVISION THREE

IN A thrilling, hard-fought encounter at the Volunteer Park, Linden defeated Cambuslang to stave off relegation.

From the kick-off Linden made their intentions known, flinging everything into attack. This paid off as first Nathan Murray then Michael Graham had a pop at the line – good backing up from Gary Wardle saw the prop dive in to score.

Cambuslang plundered a try after loose defending by Linden, but pressure from the home forwards saw Craig Mitchell send Steven Bouglas thundering in at posts. Gavin Stirling did the needful to collect full points. The opposition responded with a touchdown, but with Teri forwards and backs combining well it was only a matter of time before the visitors gave again, allowing Bouglas to power over with Steven Renwick providing the conversion. Not to be outdone, however, back came Cambuslang with a try to close the gap to within four points.

An all-out attack on the Cambuslang line with time running out saw Linden refuse a kickable penalty as they went for the bonus point, and with the Hawick forwards pounding the opposition line substitute prop Keith Mabon found a gap to squeeze through and score, causing great elation among his team mates.

Well into injury time Cambuslang scored a converted try to put pressure back on Linden who met the whistle with more than a certain amount of relief.
